Applying For College
Getting your college application noticed requires some effort. Stand out by understanding the process and staying organized. There are many components: tests, essays, recommendations, and transcripts, each with its own deadline. Don’t miss any deadlines; keep track of them for each school you apply to!
COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS
-
-
Admissions Tests: Take the necessary admissions tests (SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and/or ACT).
-
Narrow Down Your College List: By the fall of your senior year, refine your list of colleges you’re interested in.
-
Campus Tours: Visit college campuses to get a feel for the environment and facilities.
-
Apply for Financial Aid: Starting in October, begin the process of applying for financial aid, which includes filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
-
Gather College Applications: Collect applications for each college you intend to apply to. Be aware of the specific deadlines and requirements. Most application deadlines are in the fall of your senior year. If you’re applying early, make sure to know those deadlines and requirements.
-
Letters of Recommendation: Request letters of recommendation from your guidance counselor, teachers, mentors, or employers. Don’t forget to show your gratitude with thank-you notes.
-
College Essay: Write and thoroughly proofread your college essay.
-
Transcript Submission: Ask your counselor to send your high school transcript to the colleges you are applying to. You’ll also need to send your midyear grade reports in December.
-
Admission Interviews: If desired or required, schedule and attend admission interviews.
-
Acceptance Letters and Financial Aid: Keep an eye out for acceptance letters and financial aid packages by April of your senior year.
-
Compare Offers: Compare the financial aid packages and other factors for each school. Notify your chosen college by May 1. You will typically be required to submit a deposit and accept your financial aid award.
-
Early Decision and Early Action: A Quick Guide
What are they? Early Decision and Early Action are ways to apply to colleges before the regular application deadline. You get a head start on knowing if you’re in!
Why consider them?
-
Higher Acceptance Rates: Many colleges admit a higher percentage of early applicants.
-
Early Peace of Mind: You know sooner if you’re accepted, giving you more time to plan.
-
Colleges Benefit: They fill seats earlier and meet enrollment goals.
Important things to know:
-
Early Decision: It’s a binding commitment. If you get in, you must attend that college, and you can’t apply for more financial aid.
-
Early Action: It’s not binding. You can accept the offer and decide later.
In a nutshell, they offer benefits, but there are rules, so choose wisely!
