Restorative Practices Workshop for Families 

Stamford Public Schools Families are invited to UnderstandingRestorative Practices: A Workshop for Families on Wednesday,December 7 at 6 pm via Zoom.

Restorative Practices is a social science that recognizes theimportance of prioritizing the relationships and connections between and amongall people within a school community and provides a framework for creatingpositive school climate and culture.

SPS and districts across the country are adopting restorativepractices as an alternative to traditional punishment-based discipline.Research shows that the integration of restorative practices into a schoolcommunity can reduce negative behaviors and disciplinary incidents.

During this workshop, which is being presented by the StamfordPublic Schools Office of Family and Community Engagement, Stamford Cradle to Career, andthe Stamford Public EducationFoundation, families will learn:

  • The nature of restorative practices
  • Restorative practices myths and facts
  • The connections with equity and disproportionality
  • The connections with trauma and healing

The workshop will be moderated by Dr. Jo AnnFreiberg, a career educator and expert on restorative practices, schoolclimate, childhood trauma, cultural competence, and character education. Dr.Freiberg has worked as a classroom teacher, a teacher educator, and as afaculty member at a number of universities, including Central Connecticut StateUniversity, Eastern Connecticut State University, the University of Hartfordand the University of Connecticut.  She earned a Ph.D. in philosophy ofeducation from Ohio State University.
